Brazilian football legend Rivaldo has urged Manchester United midfielder Fred to learn how to control his temper after being sent off in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Fred has emerged as one of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's regular starters in midfield this season after previously struggling to impose himself in English football.

In the first half on Wednesday night, Fred clashed with PSG's Leandro Paredes and moved his head into the face of the Argentine midfielder, who collapsed theatrically.

As is often the case, Fred was expected to receive a straight red card for violent conduct but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, he was shown a yellow card.

Fred was brandished a second yellow card despite replays appearing to show him winning the ball in a challenge with Ander Herrera

Moments later, Fred clashed again with Paredes but this time the PSG player was booked for a foul on the United ace.

Solskjaer opted to show faith in Fred and kept him on for the second half but that trust backfired when a minute after Marquinhos ahead put PSG 2-1 in front, the 27-year-old got a second booking for fouling Ander Herrera.

And Rivaldo feels Fred's error was not being calm enough to avoid risky challenges.

"Fred's sending off arguably cost Manchester United the match against Paris Saint-Germain as the Red Devils looked capable of mounting a comeback and even going on to win," Rivaldo told Betfair.

Ander Herrera was deemed to have been fouled by Fred in the second half which resulted in his second yellow card

"The Brazilian needs to learn to control his temper, especially in such a big match, and be patient.

"When you are chasing a game you might commit mistakes that will harm the team even more - as Fred did - so it's crucial to take a second, breathe in and breathe out, before going into risky challenges."

Rivaldo did have words of praise for Neymar, who proved to the match-winner with two goals on the night.

"Neymar produced another great performance at Old Trafford, scoring twice in PSG's win and almost sealing their qualification for next phase," he added.

"It was a pleasure to see him showing the world how devastating he can be.

"The French team didn't start well, but they have great players and a very strong squad that might go on to battle for the Champions League title once again this season, after going so close last year."
