Manchester United’s decision to sign him might have raised a few eyebrows but the player is already proving his doubters wrong.

There has never been any doubt about Edinson Cavani as a striker. His record at Paris Saint-Germain was incredible and many would argue that he was very underrated due to the presence of bigger names like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at the club. Manchester United’s decision to sign him must have surely been met with a few raised eyebrows though.

Towards the end of last season, it had looked like the club had found their front three for years to come with the trio of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood setting the Premier League on fire.

As a result, the signing of a 33-year-old Cavani was met with some resistance. He was expected to take minutes away from the club’s youngsters and that was not acceptable in the eyes of the fans. Just a couple of months on though and it is starting to look like an inspired move.

The Uruguayan has mostly been used by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an option to bring off the bench and he has impressed in that role. And now there are calls to start him as well. Ironically, both Martial and Greenwood are going through a rough patch at the moment.

The Frenchman is yet to open his goals tally in the Premier League. On the other hand, continuous injuries have made the going much tougher for Greenwood. As a result, the decision to bring in Cavani is looking like a shrewd one.

He might have only scored one goal for the Red Devils but the thought process behind bringing him to Old Trafford has already been justified. Now the only left to see is if he can find the back of the net on a continuous basis for the Premier League giants. If his record is anything to go by though, that should not be much of a worry.
