Bruno Fernandes has spoken out for the first time after Manchester United’s stunning 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain and says it was a ‘dream come true’ and an ‘enormous privilege’ to captain the club in Harry Maguire’s absence.

The Champions League group-stage clash looked to be heading for a draw as Anthony Martial headed the ball into his own net following Fernandes’ first-half spot-kick at the Parc des Princes.

But Marcus Rashford sealed all three points for the visitors with a terrific driven strike past a hapless Keylor Navas in the 87th minute which evoked memories of the England forward’s vital late penalty in Paris back in March 2019.

Fernandes will have breathed a sigh of relief in the 22nd minute after referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz ruled that Navas had crept off his line before saving the midfielder’s first attempt from the penalty spot.

The Portugal international, made no mistake at the second time of asking, has now lifted the lid on the rollercoaster of emotions he experienced in the French capital.

‘Another dream come true and crowned with a great victory in the Champions League,’ Fernandes posted on Instagram.

‘An honour and an enormous privilege to have been captain of a club like Manchester United, an unspeakable moment of strong emotions for me.

‘Believe and fight for your dreams every day until you can live them with your eyes open.’

There’s no let-up for the Red Devils, who play host to Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard – whose side were held to a goalless draw by Sevilla – is anticipating a ‘huge test’ at Old Trafford after United’s outstanding performance in Paris.

Asked whether Chelsea can build on their display against Sevilla ahead of their trip to the Theatre of Dreams, Lampard told BT Sport: ‘They (Manchester United) might be building on their performance tonight as well!

‘They had a really good result.

‘We have to, it’s a long season and we’re in the real early stages of it.

‘As I said before the game, we lost this game last year against Valencia so it’s a much better start for us and it gives us confidence ahead of what’s going to be a difficult group, no matter what way you look at it.

‘But, yeah, league games now ahead of us… Manchester United are a huge test off the back of a very good result for them but we have to go there with belief.’
