talkSPORT host Darren Bent believes it would be a 'travesty' if Aaron Wan-Bissaka chose to play for DR Congo instead of England.

Wan-Bissaka put in an imperious display at right-back for Manchester United on Tuesday evening as they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at the Parc des Princes in their Champions League Group H opener.

The former Crystal Palace man made more tackles (six) than any other player in the European competition on the night and expertly nullified the threat of world class forwards Kylian Mbappe and Neymar throughout the encounter.

The 22-year-old right-back, born in London and of Congolese descent, is yet to feature for either nation at senior level, making him eligible for both.

However, he recently hinted hinted that he could snub the Three Lions for his African heritage by removing an England badge on his Instagram bio and replacing it with a Congolese one.

Bent, the former England striker, believes Gareth Southgate desperately needs Wan-Bissaka in his ranks for when the Three Lions face the top European nations as he boasts the best defensive qualities of any full-back in the country.

“I understand he’s talking to people about potentially playing for Congo and I don’t think anyone can tell him which is the right option for him to take," said Bent on Wednesday's talkSPORT Breakfast.

“But for England it would be a travesty if we don’t have him playing.

"As a full-back or right-back goes in this country, he’s the best that we’ve got defensively.

“His one-to-one defending is superb. The only time I remember him getting done [vs PSG] was when Mbappe did that incredible bit of skill and saved it.

“Other than that, he made blocks, tackles and didn’t even fear the one-to-one battle with Mbappe.

“If we’re playing against the better sides in Europe - and often their best players are the wide left players - we need someone who can defend one-to-one. That’s Wan-Bissaka.”
