Jose Mourinho confirms Dele Alli WILL play against Leyton Orient as Tottenham linked with Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard as replacement

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Dele Alli will play on Tuesday away to Leyton Orient after being left out the Tottenham squad to face Southampton.

However, the Portuguese boss admitted he had ‘too many players’ as the England international continues to be linked with a move away from north London - with PSG said to have opened talks to acquire him.

The French giants are long-term admirers of Alli and consider now the perfect time to tempt him to Paris as his playing time dwindles under Mourinho.

And Jose was questioned about Alli on Sunday, after watching his team initially struggle before blowing Southampton away 5-2.

Heung-min Son scored four goals, all of which were assisted by Harry Kane, whilst the England captain also got on the scoresheet himself late on.

With returning hero Gareth Bale still to come back into the side, the decision to drop Dele from the squad completely appears to be rather final.

Yet Mourinho insists the 24-year-old must show ‘how good he is’ when he gets his chance against Orient in the Carabao Cup.

“At this moment, we have too many players in the squad,” the Portuguese told talkSPORT.

“I had on the bench; Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Sissoko, Lamela… to have Dele, I need to leave somebody else behind.

“And that’s the situation at this moment. He will play Tuesday, he needs to show how good he is.”

Spurs have been linked with signing Manchester United's Jesse Lingard as Alli's replacement.

The midfielder didn’t even make the Red Devils' bench for Saturday's home defeat by Crystal Palace, having hardly featured last season also.

Mourinho is a big fan of Lingard, however, and hopes to tempt him to north London with the 27-year-old wanting to play regularly.

A £30m fee has been rumoured as Lingard seeks his escape route from Old Trafford.
