‘Our State of Mind Will Be Even Better’ — Herrera on PSG’s Mentality Heading Into Fixture Against OGC Nice

Paris Saint-Germain has been dealing with adversity over the opening weeks of its new Ligue 1 campaign. PSG has not yet had its entire regular starting 11 feature in a league contest this season due to injuries and the recent coronavirus outbreak within the team. As a result, the club has not been dominating league fixtures as it typically does early in seasons.

PSG’s recent fixture against Metz was not one that the club took a stronghold of over the course of the contest, but it still squeaked on by with a 1-0 win. Herrera played in the contest and for the Spanish midfielder, it was a sigh of relief for him to see the team get the win. Herrera spoke to PSG TV about the contest and a key lesson learned from its previous fixture against Olympique de Marseille that helped push the club to its first league win of the season.

“It was very important to win against Metz, to get our first victory after two defeats,” Herrera said. “We’d created a lot of chances for ourselves, and we thought that if we kept going like this, we were going to be able to get something positive out of it. That’s what happened, and we’re happy about it.

“If we have learned anything from the defeat against Marseille, it is to deal with this frustration and turn it into something positive, which pushes us to do better and keep moving forward.”

Herrera also alluded to the difficulties in taking part in the club’s four fixtures in a 10-day run. From a physical standpoint, it has been challenging for the team.

“Nowadays, physical condition on a pitch is a key element,” Herrera said. “A lot of parameters depend on training, fitness, recovery … all these factors are very important, and we tend to forget this sometimes.”

The Spanish midfielder previewed the contest against OGC Nice. The club hopes for a statement win against a side currently in seventh place in the Ligue 1 standings.

“It’s a new test on Sunday in Nice, we will face a very good team, but we have grown in confidence with Wednesday’s victory,” Herrera said. “Our state of mind will be even better and we will prepare ourselves well.”

PSG will be aiming for its first winning streak of the season.
